ARTIST STATEMENT

These days with so many art labels flying around it is hard to define my art.  I'll have to leave it to the experts to give me a title.      I have reached that place in my work, where I am trying to express my feelings and memories about any given thing in a non-representational way.    When Frank Web says, " It takes more courage to paint what you feel and think than it does to paint what you see," he is telling it like it is.  So with a clear intention I paint from my vast store of memories and feelings without clearly defining the subject matter.    I like my work to be a bit of a mystery and a challenge to the viewer.

I got my first paint set when I was 8 and the learning process, that never ends by the way, began at that moment.   I won't bore the reader with the many forms of education I have received, regarding school, college, traveling, amazing workshops, books, entering art shows…etc…because hopefully it is obvious in my work that I learned something along the way.  Every day, every class, every workshop, every travel set the stage for the things I am painting today and I want to thank them all.

They, (the art gods), speak of an "aha" moment when one sees a clear vision of their art.  I always thought they were a bit whacked out until it happened to me.    I spent years learning the proper techniques to use with most mediums, then I started entering watercolor shows and at first I was juried into the regional shows, then the state shows and the national ones.  I started winning awards and was amazed that what I was trying to say, was coming across.   Telling a story using the elements and principles of art, and telling it simply, is an amazing challenge.    When the viewer understands it is a rewarding experience.

So here I am today, digging deeper with every painting and having the time of my life.

The voyage continues……………….
